RO-RO and Vehicle Shipping

Roll-on roll-off does exactly what the name says: the vehicle is driven onto the vessel and driven off at the other end. There is no lifting, no container to pay for and no time spent securing a car inside a box. For anything that runs and steers it is normally the cheaper and simpler option, which is why most vehicle export out of the UAE moves this way. Part of our sea freight services. Rolling a vehicle on rather than containerising it changes the paperwork and the preparation, both covered in our guide to RO-RO vehicle shipping from Dubai.

Choosing the Method

RO-RO or Container?

Both work for vehicles, and the right answer changes with the route and the vehicle.

RO-RO is usually cheaper

No container to hire, no lifting and no internal securing work. For a running vehicle on a served route it is normally the lower cost.

Containers reach more places

RO-RO services run between specific ports. If your destination is not one of them, a container is the practical answer even for a car.

Non-runners need a container

A vehicle that will not start or steer cannot be driven aboard. It goes in a box, loaded and secured.

Containers protect better

A sealed box shields the vehicle from weather and handling. Where condition matters more than cost, that is worth paying for.

What Else a Vehicle Needs

Vehicle export involves more paperwork than most cargo, and getting it wrong strands the vehicle.

  • Export documentation

Ownership and export paperwork prepared alongside the customs entry by our own clearance team.

  • Delivery to the port

Vehicles moved to the terminal, driven or on a transporter - see vehicle transport.

  • Storage before sailing

Somewhere secure to wait between collection and the vessel, rather than standing at the port.

Why Cannata truck

The Vehicle Still Has to Get There

Booking a RO-RO slot is simple. Moving the vehicle to the terminal with the right paperwork in hand is where the job actually is.

Moved to the quay

Delivery to the terminal on our own transport, or driven, depending on the vehicle.

Paperwork prepared

Export and ownership documentation handled with the customs entry rather than left with you.

Containerised when better

Where RO-RO does not serve the route or the vehicle will not run, we ship it in a box instead.
